Monaco Deadline-Day Chain Reaction Leaves Balogun and Camara Moves Unfinished

Monaco's deadline-day negotiations with Everton and Chelsea ended without transfers for either Folarin Balogun or Lamine Camara after a late sequence of talks involving both Premier League clubs. BBC Sport reported that Monaco had initially permitted Balogun to travel to Everton, while Chelsea pursued midfielder Camara as the London club prepared to sell Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City.

According to the BBC's account, Monaco had rejected Chelsea's approach for the 22-year-old Camara at about 16:00 BST because the proposed fee was insufficient. The French club was instead working toward a £40 million sale of United States striker Balogun to Everton. Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro said Camara had agreed to remain at the club at that stage.

The picture changed when issues emerged during Balogun's Everton medical. BBC Sport said Chelsea then reopened discussions over Camara, with Monaco seeing the talks as a possible alternative route to a sale. Negotiations resumed around 20:00 BST and the clubs agreed a £47 million fee. Monaco said Camara spoke with Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, completed a medical and signed a contract running to 2033.

Everton subsequently revived their Balogun move after failing to secure an alternative striker. Scuro said Everton informed Monaco at about 22:00 BST that it was prepared to complete the agreement. Monaco then halted Camara's transfer to Chelsea and filed a deal sheet shortly before the 23:00 BST deadline to provide additional time for the Balogun transaction.

That move also failed to close. BBC Sport reported that Balogun left Everton's Finch Farm training ground in the early hours of Tuesday without signing after changing his mind. Scuro said the forward felt he had been mistreated during the process, while Everton disputed that characterization. Monaco accepted the player's decision, leaving Balogun and Camara at the Ligue 1 club.

The unsuccessful deals also had a financial dimension for Monaco. The BBC reported that the club was under pressure to generate €150 million from player sales during the summer and had raised €106 million. Scuro said Monaco could consider sales to countries where the transfer window remains open. Camara has returned to training and is expected to be available for Monaco's away match against Paris Saint-Germain on Friday, while Scuro said both players would be welcomed back.
