Modric calls for Croatia response after seven-goal defeat by England
Luka Modric criticised Croatia's performance after a 7-0 home defeat by England in the Nations League. The captain urged his team to regroup before facing Spain.

Luka Modric has urged Croatia to recover their commitment and unity after England won 7-0 in Rijeka on Saturday, leaving the hosts third in their Nations League group. According to BBC Sport's report of his reaction, the captain said the performance had left him feeling ashamed for the first time in his 20-year international career.

Watch the highlights:

The 41-year-old midfielder was making his 205th appearance for Croatia, having agreed to continue playing for his country under returning manager Slaven Bilic. Modric criticised the team's lack of aggression and collective effort. He acknowledged England's superiority but said the manner of the defeat was unacceptable given the reputation Croatia had established over previous years.

BBC Sport's match coverage recorded two goals each for Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka, with Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon and Morgan Rogers also scoring. Kane opened the scoring in the eighth minute, before Bellingham and Gordon extended the lead. Saka added England's fourth in the 45th minute, sending the visitors into the interval with a commanding advantage.

Kane scored again in the 53rd minute, and Croatia replaced Modric four minutes later with the score already 5-0. Saka's second followed in the 68th minute, before Rogers completed the scoring in the 87th. Bellingham also supplied three assists, setting up Kane's opener, Saka's first goal and the late strike from Rogers as England maintained their attacking threat throughout the match.

The result moved England onto six points from three matches in Group A3, three behind leaders Spain and three ahead of Croatia. The Czech Republic remained bottom without a point. England manager Thomas Tuchel praised his starters and substitutes in comments to ITV carried by the BBC, highlighting their sustained intensity, finishing and defensive work across the game.

Croatia next face Spain in Split on Tuesday. Modric called on his teammates to stay united and demonstrate their pride and determination rather than allow one result to erase those qualities. Their remaining group fixtures after that are away to England on 12 November and at home to the Czech Republic on 15 November, with the top two advancing to the quarter-finals.
