MLB Suspends Former Teammates Soler and López Seven Games for Brawl
Jorge Soler and Reynaldo López each received seven-game suspensions following their participation in a bench-clearing fight between the Angels and Braves.

Major League Baseball handed down seven-game suspensions to Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Jorge Soler and Atlanta Braves pitcher Reynaldo López on Wednesday, one day after the former teammates engaged in a heated brawl that cleared both benches and bullpens during Tuesday night's game.

Michael Hill, MLB's senior vice-president for on-field operations, announced the suspensions along with undisclosed fines for both players. The penalties were set to begin immediately, but both Soler and López have filed appeals, allowing them to continue playing until the appeals process concludes.

The confrontation erupted during a tense fifth inning after a series of events that had been building throughout the game. Soler had taken López deep in the first inning with a two-run homer, extending his remarkable success against his former teammate to 14 hits in 23 at-bats, including five home runs and three doubles. The tension escalated when López hit Soler with a 96-mph fastball in his next plate appearance.

The powder keg finally exploded in the fifth inning when López threw a high-and-inside wild pitch that sailed dangerously close to Soler's head before glancing off catcher Jonah Heim's mitt. What happened next transformed a baseball game into chaos.

"I asked him if everything was OK and the answer he gave me, I didn't like it," Soler explained through an interpreter, according to MLB.com. "That's why I went out there."

As Soler began his march toward the mound, López initially held up his hands in what appeared to be a defensive gesture. However, the confrontation quickly escalated when both players began exchanging punches. In a particularly notable moment, López used the baseball still clutched in his right hand as an improvised weapon, striking Soler's batting helmet with it during the altercation.

The scene that followed was pure baseball mayhem. Players and coaches streamed out of dugouts and bullpens as the fight intensified. In a dramatic intervention, Braves manager Walt Weiss tackled Soler to the ground, preventing further escalation.

"I love Soler. We were teammates here," Weiss explained after the game. "But that's a big man, and so I just felt I've gotta get him off his feet because he's gonna hurt somebody. That was my instinct, just to get in there and get Jorge off his feet because he was on a warpath."

The irony of the situation was not lost on anyone present. Soler and López had been teammates during the second half of the 2024 season when López was acquired by Atlanta. Their familiarity with each other added an extra layer of intensity to an already volatile situation.

López, for his part, maintained his innocence regarding any intentional targeting. "It's just a shame, the situation and how things unfolded," he said through an interpreter. "On my part, there was never any intent to hit him at any point. So, again, it's just a shame."

Soler, however, saw things differently. "Obviously, I have good numbers against him," he noted. "After the home run and getting hit by a pitch after that, and then he missed way too high and close to my head. At this level, you can't miss like that."

Despite the disruption, Atlanta managed to maintain their composure after order was restored, ultimately securing a 7-2 victory in the series finale. The Braves had led 4-2 when the brawl interrupted play, and they successfully built on that advantage to close out the three-game set.

Both players continue their appeals process while remaining active with their respective teams, though the suspensions serve as a reminder of baseball's zero-tolerance policy for on-field altercations.
