Teenage Goalkeeper Milo Beimers Signs for Viterbese After European Trial Journey

Teenage goalkeeper Milo Beimers has signed for Italian club Viterbese after spending 30 days travelling through Europe in search of his next opportunity. BBC Sport reported that the 18-year-old former Glentoran player made the trip from Belfast with his father, Kevin, in a converted transit van and secured a deal with the Serie D side following a successful trial.

Beimers initially planned a journey of about 2,000 miles through Spain and Portugal, with several trials arranged but no guaranteed contract. He trained with Hercules in Spain, then flew back to London for another opportunity before a call redirected him to Italy. The Canada youth international said the uncertainty lifted when Viterbese offered him a contract after a month on the road.

The goalkeeper had been with Glentoran from the age of 13 before leaving the Northern Irish club. He told the BBC that the trip involved difficult periods as well as rewarding ones, but said the risk ultimately achieved its purpose by allowing him to continue his career in Europe. He also documented the journey on social media, including the homesickness and loneliness that accompanied the search.

Viterbese are based in Viterbo, about an hour from Rome, and play in Italy’s fourth tier after being relegated from Serie C last season. For the new campaign, the club have merged with another team under the Vigor Campagnano Gialloblu name, although Viterbese remains their home and identity. Beimers cited the people, training facilities and 7,000-seat stadium among the reasons the club appealed to him.

His competitive start was immediate and successful. Beimers made his debut on Sunday, kept a clean sheet and helped his team defeat Anagni 4-0. He wants to establish himself as the first-choice goalkeeper and contribute to a promotion push back to Serie C. Progress in the Coppa Italia could also give the club a chance to face opposition from the country’s higher divisions, depending on the draw.

Settling in presents another challenge because Beimers does not yet speak Italian and many teammates speak little English. He said the club’s players have been welcoming and are helping him learn, while the coaching methods require adjustments to his diving and handling techniques. His father is returning home, but Beimers will remain in Viterbo to begin the next stage of a career secured through an unconventional, self-directed search.
