Millwall Snatch Equaliser But Automatic Promotion Hopes Dashed by Leicester Draw
Millwall's automatic promotion ambitions suffered a significant setback on Saturday after they could only manage a 1-1 draw with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, despite snatchinng a late equaliser through substitute Romain Faivre.
The Lions looked destined for a potentially damaging defeat when Leicester's Harry Winks had given the Foxes a first-half lead, capitalising on a defensive error in the Millwall backline. The home side controlled large portions of the match and appeared to be managing the game effectively against a Millwall side that struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Millwall manager Aaronson admitted his side was below their best but praised their resilience in fighting back. "We showed character to get back into the game, but the performance wasn't what we needed," he said. "The league table doesn't lie, and we have work to do."
The result leaves Millwall five points behind the automatic promotion places with just three games remaining. Their fate is now largely out of their own hands, as they would need both Leeds United and Burnley to slip up in their remaining fixtures while winning all their own matches.
Leicester, meanwhile, remain firmly on course for a top-two finish and can now afford to coast over the finishing line. The draw was enough to keep them three points clear of third-placed Sheffield United with a game in hand.
Millwall's remaining fixtures include crucial encounters against Coventry City and Bristol City, making their run-in one of the most demanding in the division. The club's fanbase, known for their vociferous support, will need to play their part if the Lions are to somehow force their way back into the automatic promotion picture.
"We're not out of it mathematically, but we need help now," admitted captain Billy Mitchell. "We'll keep fighting until it's mathematically impossible."
