Millwall Snatch Dramatic Equaliser but Automatic Promotion Dreams Take Major Hit After Leicester Draw
Millwall's late equaliser at the King Power Stadium salvaged a point against Leicester City, but the draw effectively ends their automatic promotion hopes as the Championship race intensifies with just weeks remaining in the season.

Millwall produced a gutsy second-half fightback to earn a 2-2 draw at Leicester City on Friday evening, but the result leaves the Lions facing a mountain to climb in their pursuit of automatic promotion. Scott Ferguson's side had fallen behind twice through goals from Kelechi Iheanacho and Stephy Mavididi, only for substitute Jón Thor Elísson to equalize late on and preserve Millwall's unbeaten run at four matches.

The hosts had taken an early lead when Iheanacho converted from the penalty spot after Callum Styles was adjudged to have handled in the area. Leicester dominated the first half and doubled their advantage when Mavididi finished a swift counter-attack orchestrated by Abdul Fatawu. Millwall were struggling to create clear-cut chances, with goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen forced into several smart saves to keep the deficit manageable.

The momentum shifted after halftime when Millwall manager Scott Ferguson introduced Elísson and turned to a more direct approach. The Icelandic international had immediate impact, pulling one back with a powerful header from a Jordan James corner. Buoyed by the goal, Millwall pressed relentlessly and found their dramatic equaliser with eight minutes remaining when Elísson latched onto a through ball and finished coolly past Mads Hermansen.

Ferguson praised his team's character but acknowledged the mathematical reality facing his side. "The lads showed tremendous spirit to come back twice against an excellent Leicester side," the manager said. "But we needed all three points today. We're now relying on other results going our way, which is never ideal. We must focus on winning our remaining games and see what happens." Millwall now trail the top two by six points with five games to play, making automatic promotion a highly improbable scenario.

Leicester remain unbeaten in their last eight matches but missed an opportunity to extend their lead at the summit. Manager Enzo Maresca expressed frustration at conceding late goals but stressed the importance of maintaining their position. "A draw is a good result against a physical Millwall side," Maresca noted. "We created enough chances to win comfortably, but we need to be more ruthless in both boxes. The automatic places are within reach, and we must finish the job."

Millwall captain Jake Cooper echoed his manager's sentiments while calling on the squad to maintain belief. "Football can be cruel sometimes, but we cannot feel sorry for ourselves," Cooper insisted. "We've proven we can compete with the best teams in this league. If we win our remaining matches, you never know what might happen. The fans have been incredible all season, and they deserve one final push from us." Millwall host Norwich City next weekend before facing a crucial run-in that includes matches against mid-table sides.
