Millwall Climb to Second Spot After Impressive Victory at Stoke
Lions secure crucial away win to leapfrog Portsmouth into automatic promotion places with just weeks remaining in Championship season.

Millwall continued their remarkable charge towards automatic promotion to the Premier League with a crucial 2-0 victory at Stoke City's bet365 Stadium, a result that lifts the Lions into second place in the Championship table.

Goals from midfielder George Honeyman and striker Romain Esse in either half secured the points, with Millwall displaying the kind of disciplined, high-energy performance that has become their trademark under manager Alex Neil.

Honeyman opened the scoring with a spectacular long-range effort that left Stoke goalkeeper Viktor Johansson rooted to the spot. The former Sunderland man's strike came against the run of play, punishing Stoke's adventurous positioning and giving Millwall a lead they would never surrender.

The second half saw Millwall double their advantage when Esse capitalised on defensive uncertainty in the Stoke box. The young striker, who has been in scintillating form since joining from AFC Wimbledon, showed great composure to slot home and spark jubilant scenes among the 3,000 travelling supporters.

Manager Alex Neil was delighted with his side's application: "This was exactly the response we needed after last week's setback. The lads were focused, professional, and showed real character in difficult conditions. To come to Stoke and perform like that tells you everything about what we're building here."

The victory means Millwall now sit second in the Championship, level on points with leaders Portsmouth but ahead on goal difference. With automatic promotion to the Premier League now firmly in their own hands, Millwall fans dare to dream of a return to the top flight for the first time since 2010.

Stoke, meanwhile, remain stuck in mid-table with little to play for in the closing weeks of the season, their inconsistencies continuing to frustrate both supporters and the club's hierarchy.
