Milan and Inter reveal Generali Stadium plans with 2031–32 opening target
AC Milan and Inter unveiled designs for Generali Stadium on Thursday, setting out plans for a new shared home to replace San Siro. The Associated Press reported that architects Norman Foster and David Manica presented the project at Milan’s Castello Sforzesco, where the clubs also confirmed the name of their proposed ground.
Watch the highlights:
According to the clubs’ announcement, the stadium would accommodate approximately 71,500 spectators. Construction is expected to start in 2028, with the first match targeted for the 2031–32 season, subject to the necessary approvals. The project must still progress through further design and planning stages, so those dates remain targets rather than a guaranteed delivery schedule.
The design from Foster + Partners and MANICA places seats in two tiers around the pitch, with steep sections behind each goal reaching inclinations of up to 37 degrees. The clubs say the layout is intended to retain the intensity of San Siro’s atmosphere. A concrete X-frame would support a roof incorporating photovoltaic technology.
The transition would allow both clubs to keep playing at San Siro while construction takes place on an adjacent parking area, AP reported. Most of the existing stadium would subsequently be demolished. The presentation also drew opposition: Inter supporters entered the castle courtyard before the briefing with a banner and chants protesting against the loss of their current home.
AP reported that the proposed arena would stand on a raised platform, with parking, a museum and club shops underneath. Its exterior could use coloured LED lighting and projected images. Those features form part of plans for a venue that can attract visitors outside the football calendar, including through stadium tours and other events.
The clubs’ announcement places the stadium within a wider 281,000-square-metre redevelopment that includes public spaces, greenery, leisure facilities and retail. Generali will be the naming partner and official insurance partner of both teams. The next stages of planning will determine how the proposed stadium and surrounding district advance toward the clubs’ intended opening season.
