Miguel Freckleton reflects on rise from non-league to LASK and Jamaica
Miguel Freckleton has described his rapid progress after joining LASK and earning his first three Jamaica caps. The defender's route included four loan spells and a League Cup triumph with St Mirren.

Miguel Freckleton has described his journey from non-league football to Champions League qualification with LASK after also making his first appearances for Jamaica. In an interview published by BBC Sport on Tuesday, the 23-year-old reflected on a career that has taken him from Chesterfield's 2024 National League title-winning team to the Austrian champions in two and a half years.

Watch the highlights:

The Bristol-born defender joined LASK in July after one season at St Mirren and has made seven appearances for his new club. His European debut came as an extra-time substitute during LASK's comeback from a 4-0 deficit against Celtic, which secured their first qualification for the Champions League. He told the BBC that the demands of that appearance reminded him of playing in League Two.

Qualification has not yet brought Freckleton a league-phase appearance. He was an unused substitute for LASK's opening three matches against AEK Athens, Liverpool and Sporting. Reflecting on the draw, he described his excitement at the prospect of visiting Real Madrid's Bernabeu, while saying he was still absorbing the change in his circumstances.

His international breakthrough arrived during the September and October international window, when he earned three Jamaica caps. After coming on against Honduras for his debut, he started and completed subsequent victories over El Salvador and Honduras, providing an assist in each. Freckleton qualifies through his father and began pursuing full citizenship almost a year before his call-up.

The route to those opportunities included an unsettled period after he left Bristol Rovers at 14. Trials at Wolves did not lead to a move, and he continued through the Bristol Inner City Academy and South Gloucestershire and Stroud College. He also played senior non-league football for Mangotsfield United before joining Sheffield United in December 2021.

Freckleton did not make a first-team breakthrough at Sheffield United. Instead, loans took him to Wealdstone, Yeovil Town, Chesterfield and Swindon Town. He told BBC Sport he valued the experience gained at each club, despite his disappointment at not establishing himself with the Blades.

A move to St Mirren brought another trophy. He helped the Scottish club beat Celtic 3-1 in last December's League Cup final, an occasion he described as his best experience on a football pitch. The subsequent move to Austria has added European football to a career built through academy setbacks, loan spells and success outside England's top divisions.
