Middlesex Challenge ECB Ruling on Leus du Plooy Status

Middlesex are seeking a way for captain Leus du Plooy to resume playing this season after the England and Wales Cricket Board classified him as an overseas player with immediate effect. BBC Sport reported that the county is consulting legal advisers and the Professional Cricketers’ Association while continuing discussions with the ECB.

The dispute follows Middlesex’s announcement on Saturday that Du Plooy will leave when the season ends because he wants to recommit his international future to South Africa. The county understood that decision would alter his registration status from next year, but it said the ECB informed it on Monday that his stated intention triggered an immediate reclassification.

That timing is central to Middlesex’s case. According to the county, the deadline for registering another overseas player had passed on Sunday, one day before it received the ECB communication. Director of cricket Alan Coleman said Middlesex hopes its discussions can produce a resolution allowing Du Plooy to play domestic cricket in England for the remainder of the campaign.

Du Plooy travelled with the squad to Durham for the County Championship Division Two match that started Tuesday. However, Middlesex did not consider him for selection after receiving the ECB’s advice. Coleman said the club had hoped the governing body would reconsider its position before the match, but no change came in time.

The South Africa-born batter had previously been registered as a local player because he holds a Hungarian passport and had intended to qualify for England under post-Brexit regulations. He has not been called up by South Africa, although Middlesex said his decision to pursue an opportunity with the country of his birth changed the basis on which he could be registered.

Du Plooy has scored 2,795 first-class runs for Middlesex at an average of 51.75, according to BBC Sport. His availability for the rest of the season now depends on whether Middlesex and the ECB can resolve the registration issue. The county has expressed hope of a positive outcome but has not confirmed when a decision might be reached.
