Medvedev Stuns Alcaraz to Set Up Indian Wells Final Against Sinner
The Russian ends the world No. 1s 16-match winning streak with a commanding 6-3, 7-6 victory as Sinner dominates Zverev in California semifinals.

The Indian Wells semifinals delivered drama and upsets as Daniil Medvedev brought Carlos Alcarazs perfect 2026 season to a screeching halt, while Jannik Sinner showcased championship form in reaching his first California final.

Medvedev stunned the tennis world by dismantling world No. 1 Alcaraz 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), ending the Spaniards remarkable 16-match winning streak that began with his Australian Open triumph. The Russian needed just 35 minutes to claim the opening set, setting the tone for what would become a masterclass in aggressive baseline tennis.

The first set was a super high level from me and he started to get a grip in the second, Medvedev said after the victory. I managed to stay in there and play good in crucial points. Im happy that I was able to show the world that Im still a good tennis player.

The 30-year-old Russian converted both break point opportunities in the opener before weathering a second-set comeback attempt from Alcaraz. When the Spaniard forced a tiebreaker, Medvedev rose to the occasion, controlling the decisive moments to secure his spot in Sundays final.

This victory extends Medvedevs own winning streak to nine matches following his Dubai Tennis Championship title last month. The 2021 US Open champion, who defeated defending Indian Wells champion Jack Draper in the quarterfinals, continues to prove his relevance at the sports highest level.

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner delivered a clinic against Alexander Zverev, cruising to a 6-2, 6-4 victory in just one hour and 23 minutes. The world No. 2 looked every bit the player capable of claiming his maiden Indian Wells title.

It was a great performance - very solid from the back of the court, Sinner reflected. I tried to go for shots and that felt like one of the keys. He has a huge serve so I tried to mix it up. From my side I was very precise and it was a solid performance.

The 24-year-old Italian completely dominated the opening set, dropping just four points on serve while breaking Zverev twice. His return game proved particularly effective, winning six of eight second-serve return points as the German struggled to find his rhythm.

Sinner has endured a frustrating start to 2026, failing to reach a single final prior to Indian Wells. However, his semifinal performance suggested those early struggles are firmly in the rearview mirror.

The upcoming final carries significant historical implications for Sinner. Victory would make him just the third man in tennis history, after Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, to capture all six ATP Masters 1000 hard-court titles.

Sinner has won 21 of his 24 career titles on hard courts, making him a natural favorite entering Sundays championship match. However, Medvedevs recent form and experience in big finals - including two previous Indian Wells runner-up finishes - ensures the title match will be fiercely contested.

Both players have overcome early-season adversity to reach this stage, with Sinner seeking his first title of 2026 and Medvedev aiming to add another Masters 1000 crown to his impressive resume.
