McInnes confirms desire to keep Penrice at Rangers permanently
Derek McInnes has confirmed that Rangers want to turn James Penrice's loan from AEK Athens into a permanent signing, following the left-back's first Scotland call-up. According to BBC Sport's reporting of his media briefing, the manager has discussed that ambition with Jim Gillespie and the club's board, but described himself as hopeful rather than announcing an agreement.
Watch the highlights:
McInnes said a permanent transfer had been his preference when Penrice arrived, although a loan was the workable arrangement at the time. The BBC reports that the existing loan includes an option to buy. His latest comments establish the club's intention to retain the defender, without confirming that the option has been exercised or a new contract completed.
Penrice, 27, made an immediate contribution after returning to Scottish football. He scored and supplied an assist on his debut in a 5-1 victory over St Mirren, having joined only the previous day. He later helped Rangers reach the League Cup final when Ryan Naderi converted his low effort for the only goal against Aberdeen at Hampden.
McInnes highlighted Penrice's enthusiasm, energy and commitment in explaining his impact. In the BBC's account of the briefing, the manager also linked the supporters' response to the defender's performances and determination to win. He welcomed the international recognition and expressed hope that Penrice would return from Scotland duty with his first senior caps.
Speaking to Rangers TV in comments separately reported by the BBC, Penrice credited his team-mates with helping him earn selection. He said moving back to Scotland and joining Rangers had improved his prospects, while acknowledging that an international call-up had once seemed an unlikely outcome earlier in his career.
Scotland coach Sebastien Pocognoli explained that the selection reflected both Penrice's club performances and his suitability for the national team's approach. He also pointed to absences on the left side. Penrice joins the squad for Nations League matches at home to North Macedonia and away to Switzerland, with his first appearance still to come.
