McIlroy and Norris among winners at prestigious Laureus World Sport Awards
Rory McIlroy added another prestigious accolade to his collection, winning the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award at a ceremony in Madrid on Monday night, with McLaren's Lando Norris also honored.
McIlroy, 36, claimed the award following a stellar season that included his fifth major victory at the Masters and his continued dominance at the top of the world golf rankings. The Northern Irishman received the award from tennis legend Rafael Nadal at the ceremony attended by sporting icons from around the globe.
"This is incredibly humbling," McIlroy said in his acceptance speech. "To be recognized alongside so many incredible athletes who have achieved extraordinary things is truly special. Golf has given me so much, and to be celebrated in this way is something I'll treasure forever."
Norris was honored with the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award after his remarkable Formula 1 season that saw him challenge for the championship until the final race, finishing runner-up to Max Verstappen. The 26-year-old became McLaren's first title contender in over a decade.
Other winners included basketball superstar LeBron James, who claimed the Lifetime Achievement award for his philanthropy and social justice work, and marathon world record holder Tigst Assefa, who won the World Sportswoman of the Year award. The Spanish women's football team received the Team of the Year award following their World Cup victory.
The ceremony, hosted by actor Gerard Butler, raised over €2 million for the Laureus Sport for Good foundation, which supports youth sports programs in underprivileged communities worldwide. Since its founding in 2000, the foundation has impacted over six million young people across 40 countries.
