McIlroy Makes Masters History with Consecutive Victory at Augusta
Rory McIlroy joined an elite group of just four players to win back-to-back Masters titles, pulling away with birdies around Amen Corner on his way to a one-shot victory.

Rory McIlroy etched his name into Masters lore Sunday at Augusta National, becoming just the fourth player ever to win consecutive green jackets with a fighting final-round performance.

McIlroy closed with a one-over par 71 to finish at 12-under par, holding off a charging Scottie Scheffler who carded a four-under 68 with four birdies in the final round. The Northern Irishman's composure around Amen Corner proved the difference, as he saved his best work for when it mattered most.

A year ago, McIlroy had only heartbreak at this tournament — a final-round collapse that handed victory to someone else. On Sunday, he refused to let history repeat itself. After a third round that bordered on disaster by his own admission, McIlroy mounted his comeback early in the final nine and held on as Scheffler made his push.

The victory cements McIlroy's place among the all-time greats at Augusta. Only Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Nick Faldo had previously managed to win back-to-back Masters titles before Sunday. For McIlroy, whose major drought had become one of golf's lingering storylines, this run represents something close to a crowning achievement.

McIlroy's Sunday charge was defined by two crucial birdies at the 12th and 13th holes — the treacherous stretch known as Amen Corner that has broken countless challenges. Those two shots provided the cushion he needed as Scheffler mounted his charge from behind.

The world No. 1's final-round 68 was impressive but ultimately insufficient as McIlroy's experience in these situations shone through. McIlroy joins an even more exclusive club with this victory, having now won three of his last four major tournaments.

Augusta National has witnessed many memorable comebacks, but McIlroy's controlled aggression in bookmarking his victory with back-to-back birdies will rank among the most admired. He now heads into the rest of the season as the undisputed top player in the game.
