McIlroy Makes Masters History Again With Back-to-Back Victory at Augusta
Rory McIlroy became just the fourth player in Masters history to win consecutive green jackets, holding off a charging Scottie Scheffler by one shot despite a closing stumble.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — There was a moment late Sunday at Augusta National when Rory McIlroy stood on the 12th tee, facing the most unforgiving stretch in major championship golf. Rae's Creek waited below. The gallery held its breath. And McIlroy responded with the shot of the tournament, sticking his approach to inside seven feet.

One birdie putt later, the lead was restored, and McIlroy was on his way to making history.

McIlroy closed out the 2026 Masters at 12-under par, one shot ahead of Scottie Scheffler, to become just the fourth player ever to win consecutive green jackets. He joins Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods as the only golfers to achieve the feat in the tournament's 90-year history.

It was a victory built on extraordinary resolve. McIlroy took a record-setting six-shot lead into the weekend and appeared to be running away with it. Then the bottom fell out. By the time he made the turn on Sunday, Justin Rose had seized the top spot on the leaderboard. The prospect of becoming the biggest collapse in Masters history loomed large.

But McIlroy regrouped. He birdied the 13th and 16th holes to regain control, surviving Amen Corner the way champions do. His final test came at the 18th, where his tee shot found the woods, forcing a clutch par to seal the win.

He was able to celebrate this time with his parents, who watched from Northern Ireland last spring when McIlroy finally broke through at Augusta after years of heartbreak. This year, they were there in person for the repeat.

Scheffler's charge was remarkable in its own right. Trailing by 12 strokes entering the weekend, he fired back-to-back bogey-free rounds on the weekend and finished just one back at 11 under. He birdied the 15th and 18th on Sunday but needed one more.

The win is McIlroy's sixth major championship, moving him into a tie with Lee Trevino, Faldo and Phil Mickelson for 12th all time. More importantly, it cements his place among the greats of the game with a feat accomplished by only three others in history. He now has two green jackets and a career that continues to add new chapters.

Augusta National wanted a repeat. McIlroy delivered in spectacular, nerve-shredding fashion.
