Mbappé Hat-Trick Powers Real Madrid Past Real Sociedad
Kylian Mbappé scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Bernabéu on Wednesday, giving José Mourinho a victory in his first home match since returning as head coach. Reuters reported that Madrid recovered from an uneven opening half before taking control after the interval.
Watch the highlights:
Real Sociedad created the clearer early opportunities. Takefusa Kubo intercepted a loose pass in the 10th minute and released Mikel Oyarzabal, whose close-range attempt was stopped by Thibaut Courtois. Sergio Gómez then sent a volley narrowly wide in the 34th minute as the home crowd’s frustration became audible.
Mbappé broke the deadlock in the 40th minute. Fede Valverde supplied a defence-splitting pass from beyond midfield, and the France forward drove into the area before cutting left and striking into the top corner. The advantage lasted only four minutes, however, as Luka Sucic collected a deflected effort from Job Ochieng and drove a low shot beyond Courtois.
Mourinho introduced Marc Cucurella at half-time, and Madrid returned with greater intensity. Mbappé restored the lead on the hour after exchanging a quick one-two with Jude Bellingham, which left him free inside the penalty area to beat goalkeeper Álex Remiro with a low finish.
Madrid extended their advantage eight minutes later. Bellingham regained possession near the byline through his pressing and delivered a low cross that left Vinícius Júnior with a close-range tap-in. The goal put the hosts firmly in command after the difficulties they had encountered before the break.
Mbappé completed his treble in the 80th minute. Vinícius played him through behind the Real Sociedad defence, and Mbappé lifted the ball over Remiro to complete the scoring. The 4-1 win marked a successful Bernabéu return for Mourinho, whose previous home match in charge of Real Madrid had come more than 13 years earlier.
