Matthew Brennan Wins Fifth Vuelta Stage in Seville Sprint

Matthew Brennan claimed his fifth stage victory of the 2026 Vuelta a España on Wednesday, winning the 17th stage in a bunch sprint in Seville. The Guardian, citing agency reporting, said the 21-year-old British rider finished ahead of Belgium's Jordi Meeus, with Denmark's Magnus Cort Nielsen taking third place. Brennan is riding his first Grand Tour.

The stage followed a flat 185-kilometre route from Dos Hermanas to Seville, with no classified climbs to disrupt the sprinters' plans. Temperatures exceeded 30C during the day, but the terrain and the work of the chasing teams kept the race on course for a mass finish in the Andalusian capital.

Sinuhe Fernandez and Enzo Paleni formed the day's early breakaway and built an advantage of more than four minutes. Their lead grew beyond five minutes around the midpoint of the stage before Visma increased the pressure in the peloton. Paleni later dropped Fernandez and continued alone as the field closed in.

Paleni's effort ended with three kilometres remaining, when the peloton completed the catch and the sprint teams prepared for the finish. Brennan moved around Cort in the final contest and held off Meeus at the line. He marked the victory by raising all five fingers, reflecting his total number of stage wins in this edition of the race.

The result placed Brennan among the riders to have won at least five stages in a single Grand Tour. His success did not alter the top of the overall standings: race leader Enric Mas maintained a two-minute, six-second advantage over Felix Gall. Four-time Vuelta winner Primoz Roglic remained four seconds behind Gall.

Stage 18 on Thursday is a 32.1-kilometre individual time trial from El Puerto de Santa Maria to Jerez de la Frontera. According to The Guardian's report, it represents one of the final opportunities for Mas's general-classification rivals to reduce the Spaniard's lead as the race approaches its conclusion.
