Matt Renshaw's 190 rescues Australia in Durban Test
Matt Renshaw made a career-best 190 as Australia recovered from 124-6 to 390 in Durban. South Africa reached 27-1 before bad light ended play on day two.

Matt Renshaw scored a career-best 190 to lead Australia's recovery in the first Test against South Africa in Durban, with the hosts reaching 27-1 before bad light stopped play on day two. According to BBC Sport, his 397-ball innings helped lift Australia from 124-6 to a first-innings total of 390.

Watch the highlights:

It was Renshaw's first Test century in more than nine years and came with Australia's batting order under scrutiny. Pat Cummins contributed 43, while South Africa's Wiaan Mulder finished with 4-68. The recovery left the tourists with a substantial total after losing six wickets for 124, and Renshaw's innings accounted for nearly half of their eventual score.

South Africa then lost opener Ryan Rickelton for a three-ball duck during a reply that lasted only 8.4 overs before the light intervened. Josh Hazlewood had figures of 1-9 and Aiden Markram was unbeaten on 15. BBC Sport reported that the surface had become easier for batting on the second day, although it was expected to offer turn later in the match.

Renshaw's innings also gave Australia evidence to weigh as they consider how to arrange their top order. Recalled in August to replace Jake Weatherald as an opener, he moved to number five for this Test after Cameron Green was ruled out. Nic Maddinson instead opened alongside Travis Head, creating Australia's 11th different opening partnership since David Warner's retirement.

Maddinson was dismissed without scoring after facing 33 balls on the opening day. Green, Australia's regular number five, was expected to return, leaving Renshaw's eventual position unresolved. BBC Sport outlined two possible arrangements: moving Renshaw back to the top alongside Head, or retaining him in the middle order with Green replacing fellow all-rounder Beau Webster. Neither option was reported as a confirmed selection decision.

The series brings together the teams that contested the previous year's World Test Championship final, which South Africa won. This match is also the third in a potential sequence of 21 Tests for Australia before the end of the next Ashes. Renshaw's performance has therefore arrived early in a lengthy period of Test cricket, with both the Durban result and Australia's longer-term batting combination still to be settled.
