Matt Renshaw's career-best 190 rescues Australia in Durban Test
Matt Renshaw ended a wait of more than nine years for a Test century, helping Australia recover from 124-6 to 390 against South Africa in Durban.

Matt Renshaw scored a career-best 190 as Australia recovered from 124-6 to reach 390 all out on the second day of the first Test against South Africa in Durban. BBC Sport reported that his 397-ball innings was his first Test century for nine years and 280 days, giving Australia a substantial total after their earlier batting problems.

Watch the highlights:

South Africa were 27-1 when bad light stopped play after 8.4 overs of their reply. Ryan Rickelton was dismissed for a three-ball duck, with Josh Hazlewood taking the wicket, while Aiden Markram was unbeaten on 15. Wiaan Mulder had earlier finished with 4-68 for the hosts, whose bowlers were made to work through lengthy lower-order partnerships before ending Australia's innings.

Renshaw and captain Pat Cummins extended their partnership to 86 during the morning session, with Cummins contributing 43. The left-hander then shared a stand of 134 with Nathan Lyon, batting at number 10. According to the BBC report, Renshaw managed the strike to shield Lyon from Anrich Nortje's pace before increasing his attacking output as their partnership developed.

A further 21 runs came with last man Hazlewood before Renshaw was dismissed in the first over after tea. The innings had begun cautiously: Renshaw hit only three boundaries on day one and continued to leave deliveries outside his scoring areas on the second day. His eventual 190 surpassed the 184 he made against Pakistan in January 2017, during just his fourth Test appearance.

The 30-year-old's international career has included extended periods outside the side. He made his debut aged 20 and, following that first century, averaged 19.41 across 10 Tests over two spells before returning earlier this year. Reflecting on the Durban hundred, Renshaw described the moment as special and said he had previously wondered whether another opportunity at Test level would come.

Renshaw had been recalled as an opener in August but moved to number five for this match after Cameron Green was ruled out. Nic Maddinson instead opened alongside Travis Head. Asked about his future position, Renshaw left the decision to the team's selectors and said he would accept whatever arrangement best served Australia. His Durban innings provided runs from the middle order without settling where he would bat once Green returned.
