Texas Longhorns Land Big Man as Matas Vokietaitis Commits to Junior Season
The Lithuanian center who turned heads across the SEC will run it back in Austin after a breakout sophomore campaign that fell just short of a national title run.

Matas Vokietaitis is coming back, and Texas basketball just got significantly more dangerous.

The Lithuanian big man announced his return to the Longhorns for the 2026-2027 season, giving head coach Sean Miller a cornerstone piece to build around as Texas looks to take the next step after a thrilling March Madness run that came within a few wins of a national title.

Vokietaitis arrived in Austin as a promising prospect with size and instincts, but he exceeded expectations in his first season with the Longhorns. The 6-foot-11 center averaged 15.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting an efficient 66.9 percent from the field. He started 36 games and quickly became one of the most reliable big men in the SEC.

What made Vokietaitis special was his ability to adjust on the fly. Learning a new system under Miller, he showed patience and improvement as his minutes increased throughout the season. By the time conference play rolled around, he was holding his own against the best frontcourts in the country.

The NCAA Tournament showcased exactly why Miller prioritized Vokietaitis in the transfer portal. During Texas three March Madness games, he poured in 49 points and pulled down 27 rebounds, including a 16-rebound performance against BYU in the Round of 64 that announced his arrival on the national stage.

With Vokietaitis back in the fold, the Longhorns can now plan with confidence in the post. Center was a position of need just months ago, and now it is a position of strength. Opponents will have to account for a player who can score from the block, finish above the rim, and take over a game when needed.

The Longhorns roster is far from complete, and plenty can change before opening night. But for Miller and his staff, knowing their starting center is locked in changes the entire calculus of the offseason. Texas will look to add pieces around Vokietaitis rather than scramble to find a replacement.

If his sophomore campaign mirrors the production of his freshman year, the Longhorns will be a legitimate threat to make a deep tournament run. The SEC is brutal, but Vokietaitis proved he belongs. Now he gets to do it again, and this time, he will have even more experience on his side.
