Masters Par 3 Contest Showcases Golf Greatest Tradition
From 90-year-old Gary Player to Tommy Fleetwood 9-year-old son, the annual pre-Masters tradition proves golf unique ability to unite generations.

The annual Masters Par 3 Contest delivered its trademark blend of family entertainment and sporting spectacle Wednesday, reinforcing why golf remains uniquely positioned to bridge generational gaps in modern sports.

At Augusta National picturesque par-3 course, the scene perfectly captured golf timeless appeal. Ninety-year-old Gary Player, a three-time Masters champion who turns 91 later this year, was still performing his signature high kicks while sinking birdie putts and lifting young fans into celebration. Meanwhile, two-week-old Remy Scheffler, son of world number one Scottie, was carried around the course by his mother Meredith in a baby carrier.

The emotional centerpiece came courtesy of nine-year-old Frankie Fleetwood, son of England Tommy Fleetwood. The determined youngster had made it his mission to clear the water hazard on the ninth hole after falling short in last year attempt. Armed with a custom-built club and unwavering focus, Frankie drew thunderous chants from Augusta patrons as he stepped to the tee.

"When I go on to the range I just think about this every single day," Frankie confidently told television cameras, displaying the same composure and steel that characterizes his father game.

Despite two attempts, Frankie again found the water, but walked off the tee with consoling support from Shane Lowry daughter Iris, who faced similar challenges. His father Tommy acknowledged the ongoing quest: "I think more than anything the pressure is on me to keep making the Masters until he reaches the green on the ninth."

The day belonged to England Aaron Rai, who topped the leaderboard with his wife Gaurika reading putts alongside him. "It felt phenomenal to win, even though nobody has ever captured this event and gone on to claim the main prize," Rai smiled, referencing the 66-year tradition that began in 1960.

Hole-in-one fireworks punctuated the afternoon, with Tommy Fleetwood leading the charge alongside Americans Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark, and Keegan Bradley. Bradley made history as the first player to record consecutive yearly aces in the competition.

Celebrity appearances from comedian Kevin Hart, who caddied for Bryson DeChambeau, and former NFL star Jason Kelce added entertainment value while maintaining the event family-friendly atmosphere.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy captured the essence perfectly: "I just think about the time span. That why our game is so incredible." The sight of Player celebrating alongside children, contrasted with focused youngsters like Frankie pursuing their dreams, demonstrated golf unique capacity to create lasting memories across generations.

As Augusta chairman Fred Ridley continues balancing tradition with innovation, the Par 3 Contest proves the Masters has found the perfect formula for keeping golf relevant while honoring its heritage.
