Mason Crane recalled by England for Pakistan ODI tri-series
Mason Crane has been recalled to England's squad for the one-day international tri-series in Pakistan, giving the leg-spinner a chance to make his first international appearance in eight years. BBC Sport reported that the 29-year-old is among the players selected for a competition also involving Sri Lanka, with Harry Brook named as captain.
Watch the highlights:
Crane's previous England appearances came in two T20 internationals in 2017 and his only Test, against Australia in Sydney in 2018. His inclusion offers a route back into the international side through the 50-over format. The BBC also reported that the Glamorgan bowler could use the opportunity to advance his claims for England's leading spin role in Test cricket.
The squad includes Sam Curran and Adil Rashid following their returns from injury, alongside uncapped Sussex players James Coles and Henry Crocombe. Jos Buttler is unavailable because of the hamstring injury he sustained last week, while Jacob Bethell continues to recover from knee surgery. Those absences accompany the recall and new selections in England's 16-player group for the trip.
Brook's squad also contains Joe Root, Ben Duckett, Tom Banton, Jordan Cox and Will Jacks. Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Jamie Overton and Josh Tongue are included, while Liam Dawson joins Crane and Rashid among the spin options. Selection gives Crane the possibility of ending his long absence, but does not yet confirm that he will play an international during the series.
Each of the three participating teams will play the other two twice, with the top two qualifying for the final. England then have three ODIs and five T20 internationals in Australia in November. Their schedule remains focused on white-ball cricket until three Tests in South Africa in December, as preparations continue for next year's 50-over World Cup in southern Africa.
There are changes around the squad, too. Jeetan Patel, Mike Yardy, David Saker and Carl Hopkinson will assist the white-ball coaching staff in Pakistan. Marcus Trescothick, Sarah Taylor and Tim Southee are not travelling. According to the BBC, those arrangements are understood to reflect a coaching rotation plan, with all three likely to take part in other England tours during the winter.
