Martin Odegaard Strike Lifts Arsenal Past Napoli in Champions League
Martin Odegaard scored 15 minutes from time as Arsenal earned a 1-0 Champions League victory away to Napoli. The Arsenal captain struck off the post after sustained second-half pressure from the visitors.

Arsenal earned a 1-0 Champions League victory away to Napoli on Wednesday after Martin Odegaard broke the deadlock 15 minutes from time at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The Guardian reported that the Arsenal captain’s shot went in off the post, giving Mikel Arteta’s side a deserved win after they created the clearer chances.

Watch the highlights:

Arsenal controlled long stretches of the contest but did not immediately turn that territorial advantage into a goal. Napoli looked to counterattack, and Kevin De Bruyne forced an error from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya during one driving run through midfield, although the danger was cleared before the hosts could capitalize.

At the other end, Bukayo Saka tested Alex Meret with an overhead kick. Mikel Merino then failed to convert after Eberechi Eze headed the ball across goal, while Ben White sent an effort directly at the Napoli goalkeeper. Matteo Politano also tested Raya before Saka shot over shortly before halftime following a pass from Odegaard.

Napoli changed goalkeepers at the interval, with Vanja Milinkovic-Savic replacing Meret. Arsenal continued to apply pressure after the restart. Piero Hincapie missed the target at the far post after White headed the ball into his path, and Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri later switched his team to a back five.

The breakthrough arrived when substitute Christos Tzolis combined with White and set up Odegaard. Milinkovic-Savic got a touch to the midfielder’s effort but could not prevent it from finding the net via the post. Kai Havertz had a goal ruled out for offside in stoppage time, leaving Odegaard’s strike as the only goal.

The goal continued a productive spell for Odegaard, who has scored four times in his past five games after managing one goal in all competitions last season. Arteta said the midfielder has recently been reaching scoring positions more often and praised his mindset and willingness to take responsibility in decisive moments.

The result also extended Arsenal’s strong recent record in the competition. According to The Guardian, they won all eight league-stage matches last season and then remained unbeaten across 14 Champions League games before falling at the final hurdle. Napoli, by contrast, finished 30th in last season’s league phase.
