Maro Itoje Refreshed for England Return After July Break
England captain Maro Itoje says a planned break from July internationals left him physically and mentally refreshed. The Saracens forward is preparing to return before England's four-Test November schedule.

England captain Maro Itoje says he is ready to return refreshed after sitting out his country's three Nations Championship matches in July. The Guardian reported that head coach Steve Borthwick offered Itoje a short sabbatical following an especially demanding period, and the forward ultimately concluded that stepping away was the right decision.

Watch the highlights:

Itoje said at the Prem media launch at Twickenham that the time off allowed him to recover mentally as well as physically. The British and Irish Lions captain had carried leadership responsibilities for club and country during a difficult year in which his mother died. According to the report, he has now completed his first full preseason with Saracens since 2014.

The break also meant creating distance from England's summer campaign. Itoje did not watch the matches live because he believed the emotional involvement would work against the purpose of his rest. He nevertheless crossed paths with the England squad at Heathrow airport as the players returned from the South African leg of their tour.

Itoje, who turns 32 next month, said the idea of taking time out initially surprised him because he had been accustomed to pushing through a relentless schedule. He believes similar breaks can help other established players extend their careers, although he stressed that each situation should be assessed individually. The timing was particularly relevant with the 2027 Rugby World Cup approaching.

His immediate focus is the new Prem season, which begins this month, before England assemble for a demanding November programme. The national side is scheduled to play four Tests on consecutive weekends, beginning against Australia on 8 November. Itoje hopes the work completed during his uninterrupted Saracens preseason will help him make an immediate impact.

The long spell without a full preseason reflects Itoje's sustained workload. Saracens regularly advanced deep into European and domestic competition during his international career, while his performances also led to Lions selection. The Guardian reported that Itoje was encouraged by England's final two summer results under Saracens teammate Jamie George, including wins over Fiji and Argentina, and now wants the squad to build on those performances.
