Mark Percival to Retire After 14-Season St Helens Career

Mark Percival will retire from rugby league at the end of the season, bringing an end to a 14-season senior career spent entirely with St Helens. BBC Sport reported the decision on Thursday, citing an announcement from the Super League club and comments Percival made through its official website.

The 32-year-old centre has made 273 appearances for Saints since his first-team debut in 2013. His club honours include five Super League championships, four League Leaders' Shields, a Challenge Cup and a World Club Challenge, giving him every major prize available in the domestic game during his time at St Helens.

Percival explained that the decision was difficult because he still wants to play and help the team, but his physical condition has forced him to stop. According to the club comments reported by the BBC, he is scheduled to have his shoulder replaced at the end of the year. He said the operation should improve his long-term quality of life, including allowing him to pick up his children without the symptoms he has experienced this season.

Injuries have sharply limited Percival's involvement in the current campaign. A foot problem kept him out at the beginning of the season, while a hamstring injury also restricted his availability. He has played seven times this term, with his most recent appearance coming in St Helens' victory over Huddersfield Giants in June. He has nevertheless been selected in the matchday squad to face Leigh Leopards this weekend.

The retirement represents a change from the plan St Helens and Percival set earlier in the season, when he signed a contract intended to keep him at the club through the end of 2027. It also means two long-serving Saints players will finish together: team-mate Jonny Lomax has already announced that he will retire at the end of the same campaign.

St Helens awarded Percival a testimonial in 2023, the year the club travelled to Australia and defeated NRL champion Penrith Panthers in the World Club Challenge. His forthcoming retirement closes a one-club playing career defined by sustained team success, although his final opportunity to add to that record will depend on his fitness and St Helens' remaining matches this season.
