Mariota and Medrano lift Commanders past Seahawks to end 12-game streak

Washington beat the Seattle Seahawks 33-31 on Sunday, with three touchdown passes from Marcus Mariota and a 50-yard interception return by Kain Medrano helping the Commanders defeat the reigning Super Bowl champions. The victory came with Washington relying on its backup quarterback after Jayden Daniels dislocated his left elbow the previous week. Mariota's third touchdown pass put the hosts 24-10 ahead, according to BBC Sport. Seattle recovered to level the score in the fourth quarter, leaving Washington to regain control after surrendering a two-touchdown advantage.

Washington's own match report credited its defense with three takeaways that contributed to 20 points. Sonny Styles forced a Jadarian Price fumble recovered by Amik Robertson, giving Mariota the opportunity to find Rachaad White for a six-yard touchdown. Styles later intercepted a pass tipped by Tim Settle, and Mariota followed with a 30-yard touchdown throw to Terry McLaurin.

BBC Sport reported that Sam Darnold was returning after missing a game for Seattle. His second interception became the decisive defensive score: Medrano took the ball back 50 yards after Washington had restored its lead with a field goal. The Commanders' account identified the play as Medrano's first career interception and said it stretched the advantage to nine points.

Seattle still threatened to overturn that lead. According to the team's report, Darnold found Cooper Kupp for a seven-yard touchdown to bring the Seahawks within two points. Washington then needed to retain possession despite having converted only one third down before its final drive. White gained 19 yards on third-and-nine, before Mariota ran for another first down on third-and-seven to keep the clock moving.

Washington finished the game with its first victory of the season and a 1-2 record. For Seattle, the narrow defeat brought an end to a winning sequence that had survived both the playoffs and the opening weeks of the new campaign. Mariota's scoring passes and Medrano's return supplied the points needed to withstand the champions' fourth-quarter response.
