Maresca Says Enzo Fernandez Is Ready for Coventry Debut

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca says Enzo Fernandez is ready to make his debut against Coventry City on Saturday following his deadline-day transfer from Chelsea. BBC Sport reported that the 25-year-old Argentina midfielder joined City for £125 million, a fee that matches the British transfer record, and could make his first appearance at the Etihad Stadium against the newly promoted side.

Maresca, who previously coached Fernandez at Chelsea, said he knows the qualities the midfielder can add to his team. He described the World Cup and Club World Cup winner as a player with a winning mentality. According to BBC Sport, Maresca also said four or five members of the City squad had asked during the final days of the window whether Fernandez would be joining them.

Fernandez served as a captain under Maresca at Chelsea, but the manager confirmed that Ruben Dias will lead Manchester City. Dias replaces Bernardo Silva as captain, while Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma are also part of the club’s leadership group. Maresca said the arrival of another proven winner had been welcomed inside the squad.

Manchester City’s official announcement said Fernandez signed a five-year contract running through the summer of 2031. His move reunites him with Maresca after the pair won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup together at Chelsea. Fernandez said in a club interview that working with Maresca again would be a major pleasure and that the coach had helped his development.

Why it matters for City is the scale of the midfield rebuild completed during the summer window. BBC Sport reported that the club spent £327 million on Fernandez, Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi, part of a total outlay of £458 million on new players. City also added Iliman Ndiaye, Allan and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, while bringing in more than £300 million through sales.

Maresca said the late arrivals of Fernandez and Ndiaye completed the squad and shifted the focus fully to work on the pitch.
