March Madness First Round Delivers Stunning Upsets and Dramatic Finishes
VCU erased a 19-point deficit to shock North Carolina in overtime, while High Point stunned Wisconsin in a day full of first-round surprises.

The opening day of March Madness lived up to its reputation for chaos and unpredictability, delivering multiple stunning upsets and heart-stopping finishes that reminded basketball fans why the NCAA Tournament remains unmatched for drama.

The most spectacular comeback belonged to 11th-seeded VCU, who orchestrated a miraculous rally from a 19-point second-half deficit to defeat sixth-seeded North Carolina 82-78 in overtime. Terrence Hill Jr. emerged as the hero, draining a clutch stepback three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining in the extra period to seal the Rams' first tournament victory since 2016.

Hill's performance was nothing short of magnificent, connecting on seven of ten three-point attempts and scoring 20 of his 34 points after halftime. His shooting exhibition included three consecutive three-pointers early in the second half that sparked VCU's incredible comeback effort.

North Carolina appeared in complete control with a commanding lead midway through the second half, but the Tar Heels couldn't withstand VCU's relentless pressure. Henri Veesaar battled valiantly with 26 points and 10 rebounds for North Carolina, but crucial missed free throws in the final seconds of overtime proved costly.

The upset theme continued with 12th-seeded High Point's shocking 83-82 victory over fifth-seeded Wisconsin. Chase Johnston provided the decisive moment, converting his first two-point basket of the entire season on a fast-break layup with 11.7 seconds remaining. The irony wasn't lost on observers that Johnston, who had shot 64 of 136 from three-point range but 0 of 4 inside the arc all season, delivered the winning score on his lone successful two-point attempt.

High Point coach Flynn Clayman delivered a fiery post-game interview that captured national attention, criticizing major conference schools for avoiding mid-major programs during the regular season. "It looks pretty obvious to me that high majors need to play mid-majors during the season, because they said we ain't played nobody," Clayman declared. "We played somebody now."

Even the top seeds faced significant challenges, with top overall seed Duke narrowly avoiding disaster against 16th-seeded Siena. The Blue Devils trailed by 13 points during the contest before rallying for a 71-65 victory. Cameron Boozer led Duke with 22 points and 13 rebounds, but the performance raised questions about their championship credentials.

Nebraska finally broke through with their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, demolishing Troy 76-47 behind Pryce Sandfort's 23 points and seven three-pointers. The Cornhuskers had entered March Madness with the distinction of being the only power conference school without a tournament win, carrying an 0-8 record that included several losses as higher seeds.

Other notable results included Texas knocking off BYU despite 35 points from projected NBA lottery pick AJ Dybantsa, and Michigan State's dominant 92-67 victory over North Dakota State that showcased why Tom Izzo's teams remain perennial threats.

The day reinforced March Madness' unique ability to create instant legends while humbling established powers, setting the stage for what promises to be another unforgettable tournament run filled with unexpected heroes and dramatic moments.
