Manzambi header sinks Newcastle as Emery reaches 100 Premier League wins
Johan Manzambi headed Aston Villa to a 1-0 Premier League victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park on Saturday, October 17. According to Sofascore's match report, the decisive goal arrived in the 36th minute, when João Gomes delivered a cross from the right and Manzambi converted to settle the contest.
Watch the highlights:
The winner came against a club that had tried to sign the Switzerland international during the summer. Opta Analyst reported that Newcastle had been close to bringing him in from Freiburg before Villa secured his move. He has now contributed three goals and two assists across four starts for Villa in all competitions.
Villa had opportunities to make the margin larger. Opta Analyst described Emiliano Buendía hitting the post, with the rebound striking goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček, and substitute Ross Barkley later forcing a save. At the other end, Zion Suzuki kept out a powerful Sven Botman effort. Yoane Wissa failed to convert late chances, while Victor Lindelöf intervened during a scramble in Villa's penalty area.
Newcastle's shooting figures showed why their pressure did not produce an equaliser. Sofascore recorded 16 attempts from the hosts, but only one on target, compared with three on target from Villa's 15 efforts. The visitors also finished ahead on expected goals, 1.50 to 1.05, despite Newcastle recording more touches inside the opposition penalty area. Possession was almost evenly divided over the match.
The defensive workload increased after the interval. Newcastle had 59 percent possession in the second half, according to Sofascore, while Villa made 24 of their 36 clearances during that period. Lindelöf finished with 11 clearances overall and Tyrone Mings contributed six. Those interventions helped preserve the first-half advantage through Newcastle's attempts to get back into the game.
The result also marked a managerial milestone: Opta Analyst reported that Unai Emery reached 100 Premier League wins in 197 matches across his spells with Arsenal and Villa. For Newcastle, it was a second successive league defeat, and their run without a home clean sheet in all competitions extended to a club-record 16 games.
