Manzambi heads Villa past Newcastle as league recovery continues
Johan Manzambi scored the winner as Aston Villa beat Newcastle 1-0 on Saturday, extending their recent improvement to seven points from three Premier League matches. According to BBC Sport, the Switzerland midfielder headed in Joao Gomes' cross while unmarked eight yards from goal, deciding the match against a club he had declined to join during the summer transfer window.
Watch the highlights:
The goal was Manzambi's third for Villa, following strikes in their 3-2 victory at Tottenham and 6-0 Champions League win over Fenerbahce. Since his first Villa start against Spurs on 19 September, he has contributed three goals and two assists across all competitions. BBC Sport reported that only Manchester City's Erling Haaland, with six goal involvements, had a higher total among Premier League players over that period.
Manzambi, who turned 21 on Wednesday, arrived from Freiburg in a club-record deal worth just over £50m. He had helped the German side reach last season's Europa League final, where Villa won 3-0 after scoring three times in the opening hour. Explaining his decision to move, he pointed to the quality of the team he had faced in that final and the opportunity to work with Unai Emery.
Emery praised the midfielder's technical ability, intelligence and physical contribution after the Newcastle match. The Villa manager said Manzambi was helping the team defensively as well as in attacking duels, and welcomed another goal from the summer signing. Team-mate Nicolas Jackson also praised Manzambi's development, expressing hope that the pair could continue combining to produce goals and assists.
Jackson, who has scored five times since joining Villa, was caught by Newcastle defender Sven Botman in a first-half challenge that brought a yellow card. The forward said he felt fortunate to avoid serious injury and believed the tackle merited a stronger punishment. He nevertheless said he was OK afterwards and emphasised the importance of Villa's victory.
Villa next host Norwegian club Viking in the Champions League on Wednesday before a league meeting with Manchester City, who have won their first seven Premier League games. Emery said rebuilding confidence after Villa's poor start had been important, while stressing that consistency in the league remained the team's priority.
