Manzambi header earns Aston Villa Newcastle win and extends unbeaten run
Johan Manzambi headed Aston Villa to a 1-0 victory at Newcastle on Saturday, October 17, extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to five matches. According to BBC Sport's match follow-up, the Switzerland midfielder scored against the club he had turned down before joining Villa in the summer, as Unai Emery's side continued to recover from a difficult start to the season.
Watch the highlights:
Joao Gomes supplied the cross for the decisive goal, finding Manzambi unmarked about eight yards from goal. It was the midfielder's third goal for Villa, following earlier strikes in a 3-2 victory at Tottenham and a 6-0 Champions League win over Fenerbahce. Manzambi turned 21 on Wednesday and has quickly become a contributor to a team reshaped by substantial changes in personnel.
BBC Sport reported that Manzambi had joined Villa from Freiburg for a club-record fee of just over £50 million. He had faced his new club in the previous season's Europa League final, when Villa beat Freiburg 3-0. Explaining his decision to move, he pointed to the quality of the team and the opportunity to work with Emery, having experienced their strength as an opponent.
Emery praised Manzambi's technical ability, intelligence and physical contribution after the Newcastle match. The manager highlighted the midfielder's usefulness both in defensive work and in attacking duels. Since his first Villa start against Tottenham on September 19, Manzambi has recorded three goals and two assists across all competitions. BBC Sport said only Manchester City's Erling Haaland, with six goal involvements, had a higher total among Premier League players over that period.
The win moved Villa to 12th in the Premier League and gave them seven points from their past three league matches. They had taken only one point from their opening four. Their European campaign has also brought six points from two Champions League matches, while they have reached the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, where Bournemouth are their opponents.
Villa next host Norwegian club Viking in the Champions League on Wednesday before welcoming Manchester City in the league. Emery stressed that greater league consistency remains a priority as his players rebuild confidence. The Newcastle result added another victory to that recovery, with Manzambi again providing the decisive contribution.
