Manzambi header gives Aston Villa victory over Newcastle
Johan Manzambi headed Aston Villa to a 1-0 victory at Newcastle on Saturday, scoring against the club he turned down before moving to Villa Park in the summer. According to BBC Sport's match reporting, the Switzerland midfielder met Joao Gomes' cross unmarked from eight yards to secure a result that continued Villa's recovery from a difficult start to the season.
Watch the highlights:
The winner was Manzambi's third goal for Villa and came in the week he turned 21. He had previously scored in the 3-2 victory at Tottenham and the 6-0 Champions League win over Fenerbahce. Villa have now taken seven points from their past three Premier League matches, with their newest match-winner becoming an important contributor to Unai Emery's side.
BBC Sport reported that Manzambi had appeared set to join Newcastle before choosing Villa in a club-record deal worth just over £50 million. He already knew his new team's capabilities after helping Freiburg reach last season's Europa League final. Villa won that match 3-0, scoring all three goals in the opening hour. Explaining his choice of club, Manzambi pointed to the quality of the team and its coach.
His early output extends beyond scoring. Since his first Villa start, against Tottenham on 19 September, Manzambi has contributed three goals and two assists. According to the BBC's figures, only Manchester City's Erling Haaland, with six goal involvements, has registered more among Premier League players across all competitions during that period. Emery praised the midfielder's intelligence and technical ability, as well as the physical contribution he makes in defensive and attacking duels.
Fellow summer arrival Nicolas Jackson also praised Manzambi's development and said he hoped they could keep combining for goals and assists. Jackson, who has scored five times since joining Villa, was caught by Sven Botman during the first half at Newcastle. Botman received a yellow card. Jackson said afterwards that he was OK, while expressing his view that the challenge warranted a red card.
Emery said Villa had needed to rebuild their confidence and become comfortable with their structure after the poor start. He identified consistency in the Premier League as a priority. Saturday's result supplied another three points toward that aim, with Manzambi's header following his earlier scoring contributions against Tottenham and Fenerbahce.
