Manzambi header lifts Aston Villa past Newcastle 1-0
Johan Manzambi scored the only goal as Aston Villa beat Newcastle 1-0 at St James' Park. Villa extended their unbeaten run to five matches and moved to 12th in the Premier League.

Johan Manzambi headed Aston Villa to a 1-0 Premier League victory at Newcastle United on Saturday, October 17, extending the visitors' unbeaten run in all competitions to five matches. The Switzerland midfielder supplied the only goal at St James' Park as Villa continued to recover from a difficult start to the season.

Watch the highlights:

According to Newcastle's official match report, the breakthrough came in the 36th minute, when Manzambi met a delivery from João Gomes on the right. Villa then threatened to increase their advantage: Lukáš Horníček touched Emiliano Buendía's attempt onto the post, before Lewis Hall cleared the danger for the home side.

Newcastle responded after the interval, with Zion Suzuki saving a powerful effort from Sven Botman. Yoane Wissa later headed over and had an acrobatic attempt blocked by Boubacar Kamara. Villa also created another opening, but Horníček denied substitute Ross Barkley as the match entered its final quarter of an hour.

Wissa missed further chances in the closing stages, while Newcastle introduced Dan Burn as an additional forward for stoppage time. The hosts could not find an equaliser. In comments carried by the club, head coach Matthias Jaissle said his players had responded after conceding, but their decision-making in attacking areas had fallen short.

BBC Sport reported that the winner was Manzambi's third goal for Villa, following strikes against Tottenham and Fenerbahce. He turned 21 earlier in the week and joined from Freiburg during the summer, having faced Villa in the Europa League final. The BBC said he chose Villa after Newcastle had also pursued him.

Manzambi's contribution has included two assists alongside those three goals since his first Villa start on September 19, according to the BBC. Emery praised the midfielder's intelligence, technical ability and physical contribution at both ends of the pitch. The manager also welcomed another goal from a player establishing himself in a reshaped squad.

Villa moved to 12th in the Premier League, with seven points from their past three league matches after collecting only one from their opening four. BBC Sport reported that Emery stressed the importance of greater league consistency as his side rebuild confidence following that slow start.
