Manchester United Sign Mexico Captain Rebeca Bernal From Washington Spirit

Manchester United have completed the signing of Mexico captain Rebeca Bernal from Washington Spirit, adding an experienced and versatile player before the Women’s Super League transfer window closes. The 29-year-old has agreed a three-year contract and can operate in central defence or central midfield.

BBC Sport reports that the deal is believed to be worth up to £300,000. United have not disclosed a fee in the reporting, so the precise financial terms remain unconfirmed. Bernal will become the first Mexican player to feature in the Women’s Super League when she makes her competition debut.

Bernal said representing Manchester United was a privilege and described the move as a new chapter in her career. She also praised the environment under head coach Eva Olid and said she intended to contribute her experience and passion as the squad pursues its ambitions.

The transfer follows Bernal’s spell with Washington Spirit, where she helped the club win the Challenge Cup. Before moving to the United States, she made 223 appearances for CF Monterrey, giving United a player with extensive club experience in Mexico as well as recent experience in the National Women’s Soccer League.

At international level, Bernal has made 78 appearances for Mexico and scored nine goals. Her record includes the winner in the women’s football final at the 2023 Pan American Games, when Mexico beat Chile to claim that title for the first time. She joins United carrying both captaincy responsibility and tournament-winning experience.

Bernal is Manchester United’s fourth signing of the summer window. Defender Andrea Medina, goalkeeper Janina Leitzig and Sweden winger Monica Jusu Bah had already joined the squad. United begin their WSL campaign under Olid away to London City Lionesses on Friday, with the league’s transfer window due to close at 23:00 BST on Thursday.
