Manchester United retain Michael Carrick after eight-match winless run
Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for Saturday's visit to Chelsea, with the club giving him an opportunity to reverse their poor start to the season, according to BBC Sport. The decision follows an eight-match winless run across all competitions and Sunday's 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
Watch the highlights:
Carrick led training on Tuesday morning as United continued preparations for Stamford Bridge. BBC Sport reported that club sources subsequently confirmed he would take charge of that fixture, although no timescale had been attached to the opportunity to improve results. The immediate decision therefore leaves the longer-term position unresolved rather than establishing a fixed period in which he is guaranteed to remain.
The downturn contrasts with the results that earned Carrick the permanent job. He took interim charge in January following Ruben Amorim's departure and was appointed permanently in May after guiding United to third place and Champions League qualification. This season, however, United have won only one of their first eight Premier League matches, alongside setbacks in European competition.
The pressure intensified after a 4-1 Champions League loss at Como on 21 October. Captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned Carrick's tactics after that game, while Lisandro Martinez had earlier criticised the club's investment in the squad. Fernandes was then named among the substitutes against Bournemouth and did not enter the match. BBC Sport said it had not been informed what discussions, if any, had taken place between the captain and manager.
Chief executive Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox were at Carrington on Monday as the club considered its immediate direction, BBC Sport reported. Carrick also attended the training ground and watched a closed-doors Under-21s match. On Tuesday, he and several players signed autographs and posed for photographs with supporters visiting the training ground before confirmation of his position emerged.
United's schedule offers little pause after Chelsea. A Champions League match against Roma follows three days later, with Aston Villa next in the Premier League before the international break. Carrick is due to address the media on Thursday as preparations continue for the first of those fixtures.
