Manchester United Bizet Donnum Pursues Dual Dreams of Football and Motherhood
Manchester United winger Celin Bizet Donnum is proving that professional football and motherhood need not be mutually exclusive, as the Norway international navigates pregnancy while maintaining her elite athletic career with unwavering determination.
The 24-year-old announced in December that she and husband Aron Bizet Donnum, also a professional footballer, are expecting their first child in 2026. Rather than viewing this as a career interruption, Bizet Donnum embraces the opportunity to fulfill what she describes as her two life dreams simultaneously.
If you have two dreams, you can live both of them at the same time, Bizet Donnum explained during an appearance on the BBC Women Football Weekly podcast. For her, starting a family during her playing prime felt like a natural progression rather than a sacrifice.
The decision required considerable courage given the traditional expectations surrounding female athletes and childbearing. It was a hard thing to actually get pregnant and not be in the team. Missing out the whole season - it is very scary, she acknowledged. But for me, it was even more scary to not have the baby in my career.
This perspective contrasts with previous generations of female footballers who typically delayed motherhood until after retirement. Former England striker Ellen White, who interviewed Bizet Donnum for the podcast, reflected on her own experience of waiting until her playing career concluded.
When I was playing, a lot of players older than me waited until they retired - similar to what I did, White observed. I do not know if it was because of security, not knowing if you are going to feel that support from your club or judgement or even if you are going to feel ready to come back.
The contrast highlights evolving attitudes within women football and improved institutional support systems. White noted how tournament schedules and career uncertainties previously created pressure for players to choose between athletic ambitions and family planning.
Manchester United response to Bizet Donnum situation exemplifies what the club describes as a culture change that empowers players to make informed choices about their personal lives. The club has implemented comprehensive support measures beyond basic regulatory requirements, including personalized nutrition plans, psychosocial support, physiotherapy, and sleep optimization.
Bizet Donnum praised United approach, emphasizing the freedom she has been given to maintain her relationship with her husband, who plays for Toulouse in France. The club flexibility in accommodating her travel needs demonstrates practical support that enables personal relationships to flourish alongside professional commitments.
One unexpected element of her pregnancy journey involved education about pelvic floor health, an aspect she had not previously considered. I did not have a clue about pelvic floor! Bizet Donnum admitted. But then when I got pregnant, the doctor at Manchester United introduced me and the physio has been game-changing for me.
This specialized medical support reflects the comprehensive approach modern clubs are adopting to support pregnant athletes. Arsenal and West Ham have similarly built extensive support networks around their pregnant players, including Sweden international Amanda Ilestedt and Katrina Gorry among others.
The broader Women Super League has established guidelines that clubs like Tottenham and Brighton follow, adhering to WSL, FIFA and FifPro standards for supporting players through pregnancy. These policies represent significant progress in recognizing the unique needs of female athletes.
Despite her excitement about impending motherhood, Bizet Donnum eagerness to return to competitive football remains undiminished. I am so excited to come back, she revealed. It is hard when I am watching the games and wishing I played.
Her philosophical approach to the temporary absence demonstrates maturity beyond her years. But then it is one season I am missing. After my career, will I look back and think: Damn, I did not play that season or will I just be happy that I have had a kid?
Bizet Donnum journey represents broader changes within women football, where increasing professionalization has created environments that better accommodate the full spectrum of female experiences and life choices.
