Manchester City begin WSL title defence with 3-1 win over Birmingham

Manchester City opened their Women’s Super League title defence with a 3-1 home victory over promoted Birmingham City as the expanded 14-team competition began its new season. BBC Sport reported that the champions overcame a slower first half before taking control at the Joie Stadium, where their attacking depth helped deliver three points despite an injury-hit squad.

Birmingham, last season’s WSL 2 winners, competed well on their return to the top division, but City imposed themselves after the interval. Manager Andree Jeglertz described the first half as hesitant and said his side operated more smoothly in the second. He was pleased with the win while also making clear that City wanted to create and score more.

Chelsea, winners of six consecutive WSL titles before finishing third last season, were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. According to BBC Sport, Chelsea recorded 57 touches in Villa’s penalty area and 23 shots from inside the box. They also hit the crossbar and had a goal disallowed for offside, but could not turn that pressure into a winning goal.

Arsenal also faced a difficult opening assignment away to Brighton. Nineteen-year-old Lisa Baum scored on her Arsenal debut to secure a 1-0 victory in Arturo Ruiz’s first match in charge of Brighton. New Arsenal signings Ona Batlle and Georgia Stanway also made their debuts, while Katie McCabe started for Chelsea following her move across London.

London City Lionesses beat Manchester United 2-1 on Friday in another notable result. The London City squad, featuring new arrivals Alexia Putellas and Mapi Leon, had 60 percent possession and 11 shots. Tottenham began with a 3-1 win over West Ham, with Kirsty Hanson scoring twice on her debut after joining from Aston Villa.

Liverpool produced the largest win of the opening round, defeating promoted Charlton Athletic 4-0 after waiting until January for their first league victory last season. New signing Vivien Endemann was among Liverpool’s standout players and scored in the win. Crystal Palace supplied another upset by beating Everton 1-0 through Lexi Lloyd-Smith’s first-half finish, then limiting Everton to a single shot on target in stoppage time.
