Manchester City Sign Germany Full-Back Carlotta Wamser on Four-Year Deal
Manchester City have completed the signing of Germany international Carlotta Wamser from Bayer Leverkusen on a four-year contract. BBC Sport reported the deal on Monday, identifying the 22-year-old as a full-back capable of playing on either side of defence.
Wamser moved to Leverkusen from Eintracht Frankfurt on a free transfer in July 2025. Her stay there has lasted a little more than a year before this switch to the Women's Super League champions, who have added another versatile defender ahead of the new league campaign.
The move makes Wamser City's third signing of the summer. Defender Niamh Charles has arrived from Chelsea, while England forward Beth Mead has joined from Arsenal. BBC Sport reported that Charles is currently among City's injury absentees, alongside Grace Clinton, Vivianne Miedema, Jade Rose and Laura Wienroither. Wamser therefore adds immediate depth to a squad dealing with several unavailable players.
At international level, Wamser has collected 14 senior caps for Germany after progressing through the country's youth teams. She was part of the Germany side that won the European Under-17 Championship in 2019, adding a major youth honour to her early career before making her senior international debut in 2025.
Wamser said she had received a strong welcome in Manchester and viewed the transfer as the right next step for her development. She described the English league as the best in the world and City as one of its leading clubs, while also welcoming the challenge presented by the move. City director of football Therese Sjogran said the club had admired Wamser for some time and believes she will bring energy, passion and a willingness to learn.
City begin their Women's Super League title defence at home to Birmingham City on Sunday. Wamser's arrival gives the champions another option on both defensive flanks as they prepare for that opening fixture and attempt to manage the absences already affecting their squad.
