Manchester City lodge appeal against financial-rules verdict
Manchester City have confirmed they have lodged an appeal against an independent commission's findings that they breached Premier League financial regulations, BBC Sport reported on Friday. The club continues to deny wrongdoing and says the decision contains substantial legal and factual errors. City said its submission was filed on Thursday evening, taking its challenge to the findings into the appeals process.
Watch the highlights:
The club's statement maintained that evidence supporting its position had been presented with the appeal. According to BBC Sport, the verdict announced on Tuesday concerned financial regulations covering the seasons from 2009-10 to 2017-18. The Premier League has characterised the breaches as a sustained pattern of rule-breaking over almost a decade, while City disputes the commission's conclusions.
Among the findings reported by the BBC was that commercial arrangements had been used to conceal more than £830m in funding. The commission also found that City had used mechanisms to obscure the full extent of some club liabilities. Those findings form part of the wider dispute that remains contested by the club; the appeal announcement does not resolve that disagreement.
BBC Sport reported, citing sources, that City's appeal was expected to argue that important sponsorship agreements were funded by the Abu Dhabi government rather than the club's owners. That distinction is relevant because Premier League rules permit sponsorship by state-owned organisations. The reported argument concerns the origin of the money, and should not be treated as an accepted finding about the arrangements.
The Football Association separately said on Friday that it was examining the verdict and would consider appropriate action. English football's governing body linked its review to the integrity of the sport, but said it would not comment further while proceedings between City and the Premier League remained ongoing. It said it would continue following developments.
City's principal sponsor, Etihad Airways, has also challenged implications it says arise from publication of the commission's findings. BBC Sport reported that the airline was considering legal action against the Premier League and denied involvement in improper commercial arrangements. That remains a stated possibility rather than confirmation that a separate legal claim has been filed.
