Manchester City Agree £125m Deal for Chelsea Midfielder Enzo Fernandez

Manchester City have agreed to pay Chelsea £125 million for midfielder Enzo Fernandez, a fee that would equal the British transfer record. BBC Sport reported that the two clubs reached an agreement after negotiations over the previous 24 hours, moving the Argentina international closer to a switch to the Etihad Stadium.

The transfer has not yet been completed. According to the BBC, Fernandez is due to undergo a medical before signing a long-term contract with City, while personal terms are not expected to prevent the move. That leaves the medical and final formalities as the remaining steps following the agreement between the clubs.

The reported £125 million price would match the amount Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak in the summer of 2025. It would also represent a profit on the £107 million Chelsea paid Benfica for Fernandez in 2023, when that deal set a British transfer record. The proposed City move would therefore place the midfielder at the center of another landmark domestic transfer.

Fernandez would reunite with Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, who previously coached him at Chelsea. BBC Sport said Maresca wants to work with the midfielder again after City lost several players in that area of the squad during the summer. Fernandez is also open to the move, according to the report.

The midfielder was absent from Chelsea's two most recent matches before the agreement. He did not take part in the club's 4-3 Premier League win over Brighton on Sunday or the 2-0 Carabao Cup victory against Luton three days earlier. BBC Sport noted that reports in Argentina had suggested Fernandez asked not to be included in the squad.

The agreement is a major deadline-day development, but it remains an agreed transfer rather than a completed signing until Fernandez passes the medical and the required documents are finalized. If those steps are completed, City will have matched the British record to add a player already familiar with Maresca's methods, while Chelsea will receive more than the fee they committed to sign him from Benfica.
