Man City Survive Saints Scare to Reach Fourth Consecutive FA Cup Final
Manchester City have reached their fourth consecutive FA Cup final after surviving a nervy semi-final encounter with Southampton at Wembley Stadium. The reigning champions looked to be cruising toward victory when they took a 2-0 lead through second-half goals, but Southampton refuse to yield, pulling one back and creating several dangerous chances before City held on for a 2-1 victory.
Watch the highlights:
Pep Guardiola's side opened the scoring against the run of play in the 58th minute, with the Saints having dominated the first half. Southampton had multiple chances to take the lead before half-time, with City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega making two crucial saves to keep the score level. The breakthrough came from a slick passing move that unlocked the Southampton defence, with the finish being put away from close range.
The second goal arrived just 12 minutes later, providing City with what appeared to be a comfortable cushion. However, Southampton, who have defied expectations this season, refused to accept defeat. They pulled one back with a well-taken goal that gave the 40,000+ travelling fans among the 90,000 crowd genuine hope of an upset.
The final 20 minutes became increasingly tense as Southampton threw everything forward. Guardiola sent on additional defensive midfielders to protect the lead, and the City backline stood firm under immense pressure. The Saints had three clear chances to equalise in the closing stages, but City's experience and quality ultimately told.
Speaking after the match, Guardiola praised his team's resilience: "Southampton made it incredibly difficult for us. They are a fantastic side with tremendous spirit. We knew it would be a battle, and we are relieved to have secured our place in the final. We will need to be much better in the final."
City will face either Nottingham Forest or Newcastle United in the final at Wembley next month, as they look to secure a domestic double after their Premier League title charge remains on track.
The result means Guardiola's side have now reached the FA Cup final for the fourth year running, matching their own record set between 2018 and 2021. They remain on course to become only the second team in history to win four consecutive FA Cups, after Arsenal's 'double double' side of the 1970s and 80s.
Southampton's manager expressed pride in his team's performance despite the defeat: "We came so close to causing a major upset. The players gave everything, and the supporters were incredible. We must now focus on our remaining league fixtures and finish the season strongly."
