Man City Edge Burnley to Return to Premier League Summit Amid Relegation Drama
Manchester City secured a hard-fought victory over Burnley that not only returned them to the top of the Premier League but also confirmed Burnley's relegation from the top flight.

Manchester City returned to the summit of the Premier League on Wednesday night after a hard-fought victory over already-relegated Burnley at the Etihad Stadium. The 2-1 win, though unconvincing in patches, proved enough to leapfrog Arsenal who had drawn with Liverpool earlier in the day. City struggled for fluency throughout, but goals from Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne proved sufficient against a Burnley side that showed fight despite their impending drop to the Championship.

Watch the highlights:

Burnley, under manager Vincent Kompany in his first season back in the Premier League, came into the match already knowing they would be relegated regardless of the result. However, the Clarets refused to roll over and made City work extremely hard for all three points. They took a shock early lead through a well-worked goal that exposed defensive uncertainties in City's backline, sending the away end into raptures.

City's response came through their talismanic striker Haaland, who capitalized on a defensive error to restore parity just before halftime. The Norwegian striker's 27th league goal of the season brought the home crowd back into the contest. De Bruyne's second-half strike from distance proved to be the winner, though City had to survive a late Burnley rally that saw them hit the post twice in the closing minutes.

The victory moves City level on points with Arsenal at the top of the table, with goal difference currently favoring the Gunners. However, City have a game in hand that could prove decisive in the title race's final reckoning. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will feel his side remain in control despite the draw, as their destiny remains in their own hands.

For Burnley, this result marks the end of a difficult season that promised much after their promotion campaign but ultimately ended in disappointment. City, meanwhile, continue their pursuit of a fifth consecutive Premier League title, with their destiny now firmly in their own hands with just four games remaining.
