Mamoré reach youth final after Uberlândia withdraw following 51 dismissals
Mamoré have advanced to the final of the second division of the Minas Gerais Under-20 Championship after Uberlândia withdrew from the return leg of their semi-final following a match that produced 51 dismissals. Brazilian outlet ge reported that the state federation accepted the withdrawal on Wednesday and cancelled Sunday's scheduled fixture in Patos de Minas.
Watch the highlights:
BBC Sport reported that 43 players and eight members of the coaching staffs were sent off during the first leg at Parque do Sabiá. It described the total as a world record, exceeding the 36 dismissals recorded in a 2011 Argentine fifth-division match between Atlético Claypole and Victoriano Arenas. Three players had been dismissed before the main confrontation.
According to the referee's account cited by the BBC, the trouble began after Mamoré moved 3-1 ahead. Davi directed taunts towards the opposition bench during the celebrations, and Uberlândia goalkeeping coach Paulo Sergio Dias Dos Santos entered the pitch to confront him. A wider clash followed, and referee Fernando Patrick Drosghic Modesto abandoned the match after an interruption of approximately 40 minutes.
The BBC also cited reporting by Brazilian outlet O Tempo that military police were called following damage at the stadium. A police report listed 14 broken doors, damage to shower facilities and windows, and destroyed furniture. The disciplinary consequences of the dismissals left Mamoré with only seven players available for the return match.
Uberlândia described their withdrawal as an act of fair play, according to the club statement published by ge. The club said it had eligible under-20 and under-17 players but would not contest the second leg in those circumstances. Mamoré's place in the final also secures promotion, while Uberlândia remain eligible for the third-place contest, which offers another route to the top division.
The withdrawal does not end the disciplinary process. Ge reported that the federation said the incidents would still be considered by Minas Gerais' sports justice tribunal. Automatic suspensions will be treated as served despite the cancelled fixture, while Uberlândia's home match in the third-place contest is to take place behind closed doors for security reasons.
