Mamardashvili denies Price as Northern Ireland draw with Georgia
Giorgi Mamardashvili saved Isaac Price's late penalty as Georgia drew 0-0 with Northern Ireland at Windsor Park on Monday. Sky Sports reported that the goalkeeper denied Price in the 84th minute, leaving the hosts unbeaten but unable to turn their chances into a third victory in Nations League Group B2.
Watch the highlights:
The Irish Football Association confirmed that Northern Ireland lead the group with eight points from four matches. Hungary are a point behind, followed by Ukraine on four and Georgia on two. Michael O'Neill's team have completed the four-game international window without conceding, following wins against Georgia and Ukraine and a goalless draw with Hungary.
Northern Ireland threatened before the interval through Ruairi McConville, whose header from Justin Devenny's cross was pushed away by Mamardashvili. The Irish FA's report also described a Jamie Donley effort that the goalkeeper collected beneath the bar. At the other end, Pierce Charles kept out Zuriko Davitashvili, ensuring Georgia's first-half opportunity did not produce the opening goal.
Sky Sports reported that Charles later stopped a deflected effort from Giorgi Tsitaishvili as Georgia became more threatening after the break. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also shot over. The clean sheet was Northern Ireland's fourth consecutive shutout in competitive fixtures, their first such sequence since 2017, and Charles's seventh in nine competitive appearances.
The late penalty followed another Mamardashvili save, this time from substitute Josh Magennis. McConville headed against the crossbar at the resulting corner and was fouled during the scramble. Referee Sebastian Gishamer awarded the spot-kick following a video review, but Price could not beat Mamardashvili. Sky Sports also reported an unsuccessful Georgian penalty appeal after Callum Marshall collided with Saba Sazonov near the end.
The Irish FA's account recorded further Northern Ireland opportunities for Ciaron Brown and Shea Charles in the closing stages, but neither found the target. The group leaders now have two matches remaining in November: Ukraine at home in Belfast, followed by Hungary away in Budapest. Those fixtures will complete their League B group schedule.
