Mallorca goalkeeper Iván Cuéllar hospitalised after training-ground accident

Mallorca goalkeeper Iván Cuéllar was taken to hospital on Monday after a large decorative structure collapsed in the dining room at the club's training ground, causing a significant head wound. In an official statement, Mallorca said the player would remain under medical observation for the following 24 hours.

The club identified the location as its Ciutat Esportiva Antonio Asensio complex, also known as Son Bibiloni. Its statement described the structure as part of the dining room's decoration but did not explain why it fell. Mallorca confirmed that Cuéllar had been transferred to hospital for treatment, without providing a timetable for his return to football.

Onda Cero Mallorca reported that the 42-year-old arrived at the hospital with a bandage around his head, accompanied by the club's head of protocol, Anabel Soto. The broadcaster described his condition as stable, while noting that further details about the extent of the injury and any medical tests had not been made public.

The accident reduces the goalkeeping cover available to coach Luis García. El Debate reported that Lucas Bergström is away with Finland, leaving Arnau Tenas as the only available first-team goalkeeper. Cuéllar's period of observation is confirmed, but the club's announcement did not specify whether he would miss Mallorca's next match or how long any absence might last.

Mallorca are due to visit Girona in the Spanish second division on Sunday. According to the Guardian, both clubs were relegated from La Liga last season and have collected 13 points from their opening seven games. Mallorca's most recent fixture ended in a 1-0 home defeat by Almería, with Tenas in goal.

Cuéllar joined Mallorca from Sporting de Gijón in 2023 and renewed his contract this summer through 2027, Onda Cero reported. His previous clubs include Atlético de Madrid, Eibar and Leganés, and he has made more than 200 appearances in Spain's top division. For now, Mallorca's confirmed medical plan is hospital treatment followed by observation, rather than a scheduled return to training.
