Maguire backs Carrick after Bournemouth beat Manchester United 3-0
Harry Maguire said Manchester United’s players remain behind Michael Carrick after a 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth. United have won only once in eight Premier League matches this season.

Harry Maguire said Manchester United’s dressing room remains behind Michael Carrick after Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday. Speaking to BBC Sport after captaining the side, the defender acknowledged that individual performances had fallen short and said United needed to start winning again quickly.

Watch the highlights:

The result left United 16th, with one victory from their opening eight Premier League games, according to the BBC. Their most recent league win remains the 5-2 defeat of Ipswich on 30 August. Carrick had taken interim charge in January and secured third place and Champions League qualification before receiving the permanent job in May.

Bournemouth established control before the interval through goals from Rayan and Marcus Tavernier. Sky Sports reported that Rayan finished at the far post from Justin Kluivert’s free-kick in the 38th minute. Tavernier added the second in the 43rd after Leny Yoro slipped, leaving the visitors with a two-goal cushion at half-time.

Carrick had left captain Bruno Fernandes out of the starting line-up and turned to Matheus Cunha at the break, replacing Youri Tielemans. Fernandes remained an unused substitute. Evanilson had an effort disallowed before scoring Bournemouth’s third in the 71st minute, beating goalkeeper Senne Lammens to the ball to complete the scoring, Sky reported.

For Bournemouth manager Marco Rose, the victory brought a second consecutive league win and a fourth successive success across all competitions. Rose said afterwards that his side had set out to play positively and bravely. He also expressed sympathy for Carrick, describing fellow managers as people trying to do their jobs as well as possible.

United supporters sang Carrick’s name as he applauded them after the match, before boos followed once he had left the pitch. The manager told Sky Sports that his walk around the ground was not a farewell, the BBC reported. He acknowledged that results and performances had not met the required standard, while Maguire pointed to last season’s turnaround as he reiterated the players’ support.
