One killed and eight injured in shooting after Magic City Classic
Birmingham police are investigating a shooting near Legion Field after the Magic City Classic. One person died, eight were injured and one person was detained for questioning.

One person was killed and eight others were injured in a shooting near Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, after Saturday’s Magic City Classic college football game, police said. ABC News reported that officers responded shortly after 7:50 p.m., with police chief Michael Pickett saying the violence occurred after the game and largely outside the stadium property.

In the police update reported by ABC, one of the eight injured people was in critical condition and seven were stable. Officers recovered several firearms, and one person was taken to police headquarters for questioning. The account described an active investigation; detention for questioning did not establish that the person was responsible for the shooting.

WBRC, in reporting carried by WLBT, said officers secured the scene so Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel could treat the victims. Authorities suspended all Magic City Classic tailgating and asked the public to stay away from the Legion Field property. No police officers or other first responders were injured, according to officials cited in that report.

The Associated Press reported that nearly 70,000 spectators attended the game, which Alabama A&M won 31-28 against Alabama State. Both schools are historically Black universities. Pickett said most spectators and families had already left the stadium property, with the shooting occurring nearby in an area where vendors were operating along Graymont Avenue.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin condemned the violence in a statement reported by ABC News. He described a community grieving after an event rooted in HBCU traditions and family, and said authorities would continue pursuing justice. He also urged residents not to let fear define their response to the shooting.

WBRC reported that Birmingham police were seeking video footage from the incident to assist investigators. The department said submissions could remain anonymous. In a Sunday statement, city council members also encouraged people with information or footage to contact police directly. They asked the public to respect affected families by avoiding speculation and the circulation of graphic images while the investigation continued.
