Mac Allister Strike Seals Liverpool Comeback Against Atletico Madrid

Liverpool recovered from an early setback to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield, with Alexis Mac Allister scoring the decisive goal in the second half. The Guardian reported that the Argentina midfielder struck from 20 yards to complete the turnaround and give head coach Andoni Iraola a winning start in his first Champions League match as a manager.

Atletico took the lead through Marcos Llorente after Liverpool had created two early openings. Alexander Isak pulled a shot wide within the opening minute, while Bradley Barcola later tested goalkeeper Jan Oblak from a tight angle. The visitors then found space behind Liverpool's defence, allowing Julian Alvarez to release Llorente for a composed finish over Alisson.

Alvarez came close to extending Atletico's advantage with a long-range attempt, but Alisson made a fingertip save. Liverpool responded before halftime after Milos Kerkez won possession and helped start an attack down the right. Rio Ngumoha beat Llorente and delivered a cross that reached Mac Allister following a deflection off Isak. Mac Allister took charge of the loose ball and drove a left-footed shot beyond Oblak from outside the penalty area.

Atletico remained a threat after falling behind, and the introduction of Ademola Lookman added another option to their attack. Liverpool's defence held firm, however, preserving the lead through the closing stages and securing the three points. The result also continued Atletico coach Diego Simeone's winless sequence against English opponents in Champions League group-phase matches, according to the Guardian.
