Lyon removes Bavuma as Australia press advantage in Cape Town Test
Nathan Lyon dismissed Temba Bavuma after Mitchell Starc took two wickets in South Africa's second innings. Josh Inglis's century had helped Australia establish a 100-run first-innings lead.

South Africa finished day three on 140-4, leading Australia by 40 runs, according to the Guardian's live report. Earlier, Josh Inglis made 102 as Australia reached 429 at Newlands on Thursday, turning a slender overnight advantage into a first-innings lead of 100 in the deciding Test.

Australia's attack then removed three of South Africa's top-order batters before the hosts could erase that deficit. The Indian Express scorecard recorded Aiden Markram caught by Travis Head off Mitchell Starc for one, followed by David Bedingham, caught by Nathan Lyon off Josh Hazlewood for 11. Those dismissals left South Africa at 31-2 as they tried to build a second-innings recovery.

Marques Ackerman supplied 62 before Starc dismissed him, with Cameron Green taking the catch at 95-3. Temba Bavuma subsequently reached 35, but Lyon bowled the South African captain with the total on 131. The scorecard showed that Bavuma had faced 115 deliveries, making his departure a significant interruption to the resistance he had provided through much of the innings.

Inglis had earlier converted his overnight 85 into a second Test hundred. Scott Bailey's report in the Seymour Telegraph described how he reached the milestone by reverse-sweeping Simon Harmer for four. His partnership with Alex Carey produced 185 runs after Australia had been 185-4, helping the visitors move beyond South Africa's first-innings total of 329.

Harmer ended the stand by having Inglis caught behind, then removed Carey for 80 four overs later. Kagiso Rabada trapped Pat Cummins lbw as Australia lost three wickets for 10 runs. Cooper Connolly helped limit the damage with 29, becoming the last batter dismissed when Marco Jansen caught him off his own bowling. Australia added 49 runs after slipping to 380-7.

The match will settle a series tied at 1-1. Reuters reported that Australia won the opening Test in Durban by 214 runs before South Africa responded with an innings-and-31-run victory in Gqeberha. Those contrasting results brought the teams to Cape Town level, with the third Test still unresolved after another day featuring a substantial partnership followed by important wickets.
