Luke Morgan scores twice as Ospreys beat Black Lion 39-14 in Tbilisi
Ospreys began their 2026-27 Challenge Cup campaign with a 39-14 victory over Black Lion in Tbilisi, scoring seven tries to secure a bonus-point win. According to BBC Sport's match report, Luke Morgan crossed twice at Avchala Stadium as Mark Jones' side built a 22-7 half-time lead and added three more tries after the interval.
Watch the highlights:
The visitors established control with two tries in the opening 12 minutes. Gwilym Evans finished a line-out move before fellow back-row forward Morgan Morse scored from a five-metre scrum. Both went unconverted. Black Lion responded in the 20th minute when scrum-half Giorgi Spanderashvili broke through several tackles, giving the hosts their first try and briefly interrupting Ospreys' early progress.
Huw Sutton then scored from close range, completing a first-half try for each member of the Ospreys back row. Morgan added another before the break after a disrupted line-out and an offload from Lalakai Foketi. Lawson Creighton converted only two of Ospreys' seven tries across the match, but the visitors still reached half-time with a 15-point advantage.
Morgan scored his second soon after the restart, finishing down the left. Reuben Morgan-Williams then supplied the pass for hooker Lewis Lloyd to cross on the opposite flank. Replacement prop Kian Hire added Ospreys' seventh try from close range after an Owen Watkin break and a carry by Lloyd that ended just short of the line. Harri Wilde subsequently had a try disallowed for offside following a TMO review.
Black Lion scored the final try through replacement forward Otar Giorgadze from a driving line-out, but could not overturn Ospreys' lead. Evans, named player of the match, said in comments carried by BBC Sport that the visitors had wanted a fast start, to match Black Lion's physicality and set-piece strength, and to keep the ball moving. The result came despite squad rotation prompted by Ospreys' travel schedule.
The Welsh side have started their season with trips to Durban, Johannesburg, Newport and now Tbilisi. They next return to Swansea to open their revamped St Helen's home with United Rugby Championship derbies against Dragons and Cardiff before the November international break. Their Challenge Cup schedule continues at home to Harlequins in December, followed by January matches away to Toulon and at home to Vannes.
